NB365: Tom Trueman Of Trueman Blueberry Farms In Sackville
This is part of a year-long ‘Love for Local’ series calledNB365: portraits of New Brunswick entrepreneurs, businesses and organizations. Huddle is a media partner with Love for Local. Today, we hear from Tom Trueman of Trueman Blueberry Farms in Sackville.
I always wanted to work for myself and grew up on the farm, so it was a natural progression to continue running my own farm and business. With border closures and all the restrictions, our customer base has been limited to the local area for most of the past year which has had both positive and negative impacts on our business.
Those customers that were able to travel to our farm were very much interested in shopping local. They, for most of the year, were unable to travel outside of the province and the local area allowed them to seek local options resulting in the success of our business this past year. But on the downside, we lost access to our customer base who live outside the province and represent about half of our annual sales.
We have plans to continue growing our business and expand the products and experiences offered to our customers. Supporting local businesses has a real impact because it helps provide employment and opportunities to our local communities and the people that live there.
