Newfoundland Chocolate Company Closes Halifax Area Stores
HALIFAX — The Newfoundland Chocolate Company is permanently closing all three of its Halifax storefronts and pulling out of Nova Scotia.
The company has been operating in the province for five years and has stores in the Mic Mac Mall, Halifax Shopping Centre, and Sunnyside Mall.
In a news release announcing the closures, owners Christina Dove and Brent Smith said the impact of Covid-19 “was simply too great” on their business and that they are “heartbroken” to have to leave Nova Scotia.
“This has been a challenging year for us,” Dove and Smith write.
They explain that their family-owned company first ran into trouble in early January when massive snowstorms in Newfoundland forced them to close all their locations in that province.
“The loss we experienced during that time had a severe impact on our business,” Dove and Smith write.
That loss was compounded in mid-March when Covid-19 forced them to close all their stores (including their Nova Scotia locations) and lay off more than 100 employees across their company.
The company’s stores have been closed since then, and earlier this week the Dove and Smith announced that, in Nova Scotia, they won’t reopen.
The owners say they will “miss [their] wonderful Nova Scotian team” and thanked Nova Scotian customers for their support.
“We want to sincerely thank you all so much for supporting local and being a part of our family for the last … 5 [years] in Nova Scotia,” Dove and Smith write.
The Newfoundland Chocolate Company will continue to operate stores in Newfoundland and is right now offering basic delivery and pick up options there.
