Have An Idea To Make Downtown Halifax More Colourful? There’s A Grant For That.
HALIFAX – Covid-19 may have been keeping people from enjoying much of Halifax’s beauty, but the Downtown Halifax Business Commission still wants to keep the city looking artistic and unique. For the fifth straight year, the commission is offering grants to artists and muralists to add a colourful flare to areas of the city.
The Spring 2020 Gritty to Pretty program is offering three grants: an Open Grant, Façade Lighting Grant, and Mural Grant. The Façade Lighting submission is to improve the street-wall lighting of buildings on commercial streets in downtown Halifax, while the Mural Grant is open for artists who can add some colour for the enjoyment of pedestrians.
The “Open” category is the most exciting, as it is literally open to anyone who has a unique idea to add beauty and artistry somewhere in Downtown Halifax.
“During this time of Covid-19, it’s still important to support our local artists and businesses and continue to invest in Downtown,” said Paul MacKinnon, CEO of DHBC in an emailed statement.
“I’m looking forward to seeing the kinds of projects applicants will be proposing. We will continue to enhance the pedestrian experience in Downtown Halifax. In the absence of large events and gatherings this summer, we know these projects will bring a smile to the faces of people that visit, work, and live here. “
If you have a creative idea that will help add beauty to Downtown Halifax, you can submit an application to www.downtownhalifax.ca/grittytopretty. The deadline for submissions is June 12.
