SAINT JOHN – Port Saint John has reported a significant increase in traffic in 2015 compared to 2014. An overall increase of 10 per cent meant a total of 26.4 million metric tonnes of cargo handled throughout the year.
As the largest port in Eastern Canada, Port Saint John has experienced dramatic increases in traffic over the past four years. Rodney Container Terminal and Courtenay Bay in particular have increased from 1.3 million metric tonnes of cargo handled in 2011 to 2 million in 2015. Cargo at private facilities rose 11 per cent during 2015 to 24.4 million metric tonnes.
Peter Gaulton, chair of the board of directors for Port Saint John, said in a release that Port Saint John is key to opening the global marketplace to New Brunswick producers.
“The Board of Directors is proud of the work our entire port community is doing to create growth at the Port. Activity that happens here is an important contributor to local economies across the province,” Gaulton said.
“Our strategic direction is set each year by our board of directors and underpinned by an inclusive approach to stakeholder engagement,” President and CEO of Port Saint John Jim Quinn said. “This approach to work collectively on shared priorities continues to bear fruit for the entire port community.”
