Moncton and Dieppe Bidding to Host Francophonie Games
FREDERICTON– Moncton and Dieppe are up against Sherbrooke, Quebec and the French territory of Guadeloupe, to host the 2021 Francophonie Games.
The Francophonie Games is expected to attract 3,000 young people from about 80 countries. The provincial government estimates the economic spinoffs from holding the Games in New Brunswick will be $25 million,
“This event will create more than a hundred jobs during the Games. It will also be a great opportunity to showcase what the province has to offer,” said Premier Brian Gallant.
In early November a group of five experts designated by the International Organization of La Francophonie will visit Moncton and Dieppe to assess New Brunswick’s bid.
“The City of Moncton has proven experience when it comes to hosting international events, including the Francophonie Summit, the World Men’s Curling Championships, the World Junior Track and Field Championships and the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015,” said Moncton Mayor George LeBlanc. “The exceptional quality of our sports and cultural facilities and the dynamism of our Acadian and francophone community will ensure the success of the Games.”
The three finalists will defend their bids during the La Francophonie on March 1, 2016, in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, site of the 2017 Games.
The final choice for the 2021 Games will be made in the fall of 2016.
