The Most Popular Costumes in New Brunswick this Halloween
With the most spooky day of the year just around the corner, New Brunswickers young and old are busy putting together their perfect Halloween costumes.
Though many get extremely creative with their ensembles, there are always yearly trends that take the region (and North America) by storm.
Loria Yerxa, the dealer operator at Moncton’s Halloween Alley, says we should expect to see the Suicide Squad and Pokemon roaming New Brunswick streets trick-or-treating.
“Harley Quinn is definitely the most popular,” Yerxa says. “That’s the way the trends are. They have always have been. A new hit movie comes out, every little girl wants to be Harley Quinn.”
With Pokemon Go taking over the world this past year, Yerxa says that is another costume trend for this Holloween. But she says there’s one costume in particular that’s going to be even more “YUGE.”
“I am completely sold out of Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton Masks. They were very popular,” Yerxa says.
The interesting (or scary) thing is that it isn’t just adults wanting to dress up as the Donald.
“The online sensation right now is the Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton debates,” Yerxa says. “It’s funny to see that the young kids want to be Donald Trump, like eight-year-old kids.”
We’re already petrified.
Though it may seem easy to dress up as pop culture’s most notable characters, Yerxa says some people are choosing to stick with the classics.
“Red Riding Hood and the Wolf continues to be very popular and scary,” she says. “People just want to be scary.”
Yet there are still people who come in with ideas out of left field. Yerxa says if they don’t have a packaged costume, she and her staff have to improvise.
“People have different sorts of ideas in their heads. An example of that is a bat,” she says. “People want to be a bat but we don’t sell bat costumes unless it’s Batgirl or Batwoman, so I just built them a costume out of accessories and stuff that I’ve had on hand that would turn them into the bat.”
In the end, like every Halloween, Yerxa says there’s nothing you shouldn’t expect.
“Expect everything. Expects kids to be scary and gory,” she says. “Lots of young Donald Trumps and lots of Harley Quinns.”
…We’re still mentally preparing ourselves for the minion Donal Trumps.
