Moncton Cross-Stitch Supply Store Moves to New Location
MONCTON – The Stitch Bug in Moncton has moved to a new location at 142 Halifax Street. Samantha Robichaud, the shop’s owner, says she is excited for everyone to see the new space.
The Stitch Bug is a locally owned cross-stitch, embroidery, and needlework supply shop. It’s been open in Moncton for just over two years. Its new location will allow more people to come into the store.
“We’re wheelchair accessible now, whereas before, our parking was across the street on a corner, and now it’s right outside the door,” says Robichaud. “We’re all on one level [now]. Before, our washrooms were actually down a flight of stairs, so now we’re much more accessible that way.”
Robichaud says that although the square footage of the new location is slightly less than before, the store has a much better layout and people can move around much more freely when browsing.
“The building we’re in now is a lot newer, so people are definitely commenting on that,” Robichaud tells Huddle. “The area we’re in is a little bit industrial but it’s one of those areas that’s kind of coming back around; a lot of the places are being bought and changed into newer things, so that’s a positive.”
Along with this, Robichaud says there are a variety of new things to come following the move into the new building. Some of these include framing, dying their own fabric, and more.
As for dying their own fabrics, Robichaud says that they have had some struggles getting fabrics from their suppliers simply due to high demand. Dying their own fabrics allows them to have a wider variety available for customers, as well as create custom colours.
Robichaud says that she is also looking into hosting classes for people to come and try or participate in cross-stitching, embroidery, and more. Having done cross-stitch herself for many years now, she wants to share and introduce the craft to others as well.
“We don’t have a ton of [classes] yet, but we will get there,” says Robichaud. “We’ve only actually had two so far but now that we’re in our new space I think we’re better set up to accommodate that.”
Robichaud says that she is aiming to start classes early in the fall, with the goal of having some more every few months. As of right now, she says that they have had classes such as “Learn to Stitch” and “How to Finish Your Project.”
With the new location, Robichaud says that they are also much closer to another business called The Fabric Cupboard, a local quilting supply store, which she says many customers of The Stitch Bug tend to visit as well. She hopes that the new proximity will make those people quite happy, as well as the improvements that have been made in general.
