N.S. Helps Fund Thousands More Student Internships
HALIFAX – The provincial government will partner with nonprofit organization Mitacs to fund thousands of new internship positions for post-secondary students.
The province announced on January 9 it will give $13 million to Mitacs over four years to create as many as 3,200 paid positions. The investment comes in part thanks to contributions already announced by the federal government and other “participating organizations.”
Mitacs is a non-profit research organization that, in partnership with Canadian academia, private industry and government, operates research and training programs in fields related to industrial and social innovation.
The organization helps Nova Scotia businesses, healthcare facilities, municipalities, and not-for-profit organizations tap into the talent at the province’s post-secondary institutions and grow their capacity to innovate.
Nova Scotia already provides $1 million a year to fund 250 internships. The federal government, meanwhile, gives $1.5 million annually.
Nova Scotia’s new funding this year brings the number of internship opportunities to a total of as many as 4,200 over the next four years.
Participants in the Mitacs internship programs, including college and university students, post-doctoral researchers, and recent graduates, will contribute their specialized skills and expertise to help local companies find innovative solutions to some of the province’s most important challenges.
