Halifax Airport’s Most Requested Flight Returns
HALIFAX—A new, year-round flight out of the Halifax International Airport will take travellers to and from New York in less than two hours.
Air Canada announced today it will start running transborder flights between Newark and Halifax later this year.
The new route will start on December 16 and run through Air Canada Express. That means a Q-400 aircraft making the trip that will offer only economy seating. However, the non-stop flight will take passengers between the cities in less than two hours.
Initially, the flight will run four days a week. Starting on January 8, however, it will run daily.
Joyce Carter, the president and CEO of the Halifax International Airport Authority, says the flight brings back a key location that’s been missing from the airport’s schedule since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic began.
“The number one air service question we have been asked over the past several months, following the reinstatement of services since their cessation due to the pandemic, has been about New York,” Carter said in a news release.
“We know this connection is incredibly important in supporting our thriving business, industry, and academic communities, as well as our tourism operators.”
Halifax Stanfield also has a U.S. preclearance facility that provides an advantage for departing passengers who can pre-clear U.S. Customs in Halifax, arriving in the U.S. as a domestic traveller. That means passengers from Halifax are not required to visit U.S. Customs and can immediately be on their way.
Halifax’s proximity to New York (both its location and time zone) facilitates easy business connections, but also tourism opportunities.
“We know that the easier it is for people to get here, the more likely they are to come,” says Susan Corkum Greek, Nova Scotia’s Minister of Economic Development. “This new, non-stop service will bring new investment to our economy and open more possibilities for tourism, travellers, trade, and business.”
