Moncton Paves The Way For Ridesharing
MONCTON — The City of Moncton is updating its taxi bylaw with the goal of offering an improved customer experience.
Fire Chief Conrad Landry, who is also director of community safety, told City Council that stakeholders including taxi drivers were consulted and agreed the standards must be increased.
“To have a standard for the vehicles, the drivers, etc. And also we needed to include the vehicles for hire. So that’s kind of the Uber’s or the Lyft’s of the world.”
Landry noted how recent changes to provincial legislation had to occur first before municipalities could allow ride-sharing services.
Currently, there are no cities in New Brunswick offering ride-sharing.
“Now I did talk to Lyft Canada. They’re interested but they still say it’s about two years away. And there’s a new ride company from Fredericton that we’ve been conversing with.”
City Council voted to move forward with the proposed bylaw changes. Landry added more changes could be made to the bylaw before it becomes official later this year.
