Ontario Pizza Chain Offering Unlimited Toppings Opens In Halifax
HALIFAX — Score Pizza is opening its doors on Barrington Street on August 26 and they are bringing a confident attitude with them. The new pizza chain, which has five other locations in Ontario, believes its pies can stack up against any outlet in Halifax.
Score cooks its pizzas using a stone oven, which makes the crust crispy. They are also able to make the pizzas much quicker than normal, according to Gabby Arvanitis, Score’s director of operations.
“The secret’s in the recipe but our thin crust pizza is delicious; it’s crispy. That stone really gives it that taste that people expect with stone-fried pizza,” she said.
“Score is all about providing an amazing quality pizza you can’t get anywhere else but in that quick, under-10-minute time period. Our pizzas are made within three to five minutes.”
The feature that will make a lot of pizza lovers excited is Score’s pricing system. There is no extra charge for toppings; you can load up your pizza with as much as you want, and the cost remains the same.
“It’s a huge selling feature for us,” said Arvanitis.
Score began in Kingston Ontario six years ago. Halifax is its sixth location. Despite challenges caused by the pandemic, the franchise continues to grow.
“We’ve been through Covid and all of the challenges that came with it. We were able to double in size and keep that momentum going.”
The Barrington Street location is locally owned by Robert and Claire Chambers. And there will be some local products sold on the site. Propeller Brewing will be supplying beer, including a Score Pizza-branded ale. There will also be Moosehead products and a selection of wine.
Despite a well-documented labour shortage happening in the restaurant industry, Score was able to hire 15 staff in Halifax in time for opening day. They plan to hire five or six more.
“Staffing is a huge challenge that this industry has had to overcome,” notes Arvanitis. “Luckily, I think our culture speaks to that; we didn’t struggle [to hire like] other brands do.”
Staff is preparing for an anticipated large turnout for Friday’s grand opening.
“It’s the beginning of game day, so everyone is very hyped to bring a new concept o downtown Halifax. The energy is really high right now; we’re excited,” said Arvanitis.
