David you are absolutely correct on the need for politicians to see the handing over of power as a relay-race. The job is to carry the baton forward rather than throwing it away and re-starting the race.

On the points for hate in social media. Unfortunately if politicians stopped grandstanding, lying, and admit it when they make a mistake, then the public might trust them more. One thing I notice with the current federal government is the tendency to issue decrees (Orders In Council) as opposed to debate and voting. This is causing the fracturing and dividing the public into two opposing camps. The supporters are happy because the changes are being pushed through (with zero opposition) and those with opposing views are unhappy because the changes are not being tested, and sensible compromises discovered.

It is not just happening in Canada, but I think in most Western Democracies. The backlash is the lurch towards nationalism.
