Mixed-Use Building Planned For Busy Moncton Intersection
MONCTON–A proposed nine-storey building would continue to transform the intersection of Main Street and Vaughan Harvey Boulevard in Moncton.
The city issued a request for proposals for the sale and development of municipally owned land at the northwest corner, which is 1299 Main Street.
Developer Chad Blakney told city council his company wants to build a mixed-use building with ground-floor retail space, two levels of underground parking, and 147 apartments which will include affordable units.
“We are targeting at least 10 percent of units to be affordable housing and an energy efficient target of at least 25 percent reduction of greenhouse gases and energy consumption over standard building code,” he said.
Blakney explained affordable rent would be based on data from CMHC (Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation) on the median household income.
“For the Moncton area, that is $45,700. So for affordable housing, we use 30 percent of that number, which is $1,142,” he noted.
The proposal shows the main access to the building would be from Atlantic Avenue and not from Main or Vaughan Harvey although plans do show a right-turn only from Main.
Moncton City Council voted to go ahead with the sale of the land but the terms won’t be disclosed until the deal is finalized.
Directly across the street from the proposed building, construction of another mixed-use apartment tower is well underway which is the second of two buildings of the Junction Urban Village development.
