HALIFAX—Faten Alshazly is the new chair of the Halifax Chamber of Commerce’s board of directors. She was given the position at the Chamber’s annual general meeting, on April 21.
Alshazly is the co-founder and chief creative officer of Halifax-based ad agency WeUsThem. She is the first immigrant woman to chair the chamber’s board in the organization’s 250-year history.
Alshazly’s CV includes being named one of Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women multiple times, as well as Female Executive of the Year in Canada by the Stevie Awards.
She has been involved with several volunteer boards, including the Canadian Cancer Society, the Mental Health Foundation, and NSCAD University.
She is also a champion of women in the STEAM fields, speaking and mentoring young women from various post-secondary institutions, and a supporter of women in the workforce.
Alshazly has also taught at the graduate schools of Management and Design at Dalhousie University and NSCAD.
“It’s a year of growth and I am looking forward to it,” Alshazly said in a Chamber news release. “Coming out of a pandemic, we need to refocus our business community to growth and prosperity and get past the downturn we collectively faced.”
Chamber CEO Patrick Sullivan said Alshazly’s experience, knowledge of the business community, and passion for diversity and inclusion work will be a “great asset” to the chamber.
Alshazly will take over for Mark Sidebottom, Nova Scotia Power’s chief operating officer, who will now sit as past chair.
