Plans To Rebuild Historic King’s Hotel In Lunenburg
LUNENBURG–The King’s Hotel could be making a return in Lunenburg, with plans unveiled this week to rebuild a new hotel.
The original hotel, located at the corner of Duke Street and Pelham Street, was demolished in the 1950s. Right now, the space is being used as a parking lot but if the new plans are approved a rebuilt King’s Hotel will take its place.
The project is being pursued by Richard Homburg, who owns the parking lot and the King’s Arms Pub, which is directly across street.
Earlier this year, Homburg had submitted plans to redevelop the King’s Arms into a hotel. But after he was met with development roadblocks, those plans were scrapped.
The main concerns were that the proposed parking structure included in the renovation that would require some demolition to take place.
The new proposal seems to have taken those concerns into consideration, with Mayor Matt Risser commenting on the reaction he’s seen so far.
“The things I’m hearing are generally very positive and I think the residents with concerns previously feel as those the developer listened,” Risser said.
The proposal also includes upgrades to the Lunenburg Arms Hotel, adding suites, and rebranding it as the King’s Suites. Notably not included are any plans for a parking structure.
The town is now going through the process of approval and the next step require them to publicly advertise a public feedback session.
That is now underway, with the town saying the public feedback session will take place on June 14.
