Podcast: Halifax Partnership Serves As A Model for Community Economic Development
CEO Wendy Luther joins Don Mills and David Campbell on the latest Huddle “Insights” podcast to discuss Halifax Partnership’s new five-year strategy, which focuses on three themes: People, Planet and Prosperity.
The model for the Partnership is unique in that it is a public-private economic development organization, funded by the three levels of government and the private sector.
Luther reports to a Board of Directors rather than directly to the Municipality. Another important differentiation is that the Partnership is held accountable by key performance metrics to judge its success.
While its large macro goals are population growth and GDP growth, it has other key goals including the well-being of the population which is also intended to be measured. The Partnership is a role model for other economic development agencies in the region and much can be gained by emulating its public-private approach to community economic development.

The “Insights” podcast combines the experiences of an economist, David Campbell, and a social scientist, Don Mills, to explore the challenges and opportunities facing Atlantic Canada, promote data-driven decision-making among policymakers, and encourage a wider dialogue and debate leading to greater prosperity for the region.
