Podcast: A New Type Of Premier For Newfoundland And Labrador
In this episode of the Huddle “Insights” podcast, Premier Andrew Furey provides a thoughtful overview of the demographic and fiscal challenges faced by Newfoundland and Labrador, the need to diversify the province’s economy, and the near term opportunities for the province’s oil industry which represents 25 per cent of its GDP in the wake of the war in Ukraine.
“We all hope that the Ukrainian crisis passes very quickly and peacefully. But even with the passage of time and hopefully the quick resolution of peace, there is going to be a massive quantity of oil that is required that is going to be decades-long in the transition of Europe, in particular, to a cleaner, renewable resource,” Furey says.
“This is the oil that {Europe] and the United States will need if we’re going to meet our environmental targets and if we’re going to ensure that our NATO allies are no longer relying on Russian petroleum products.”
The Premier provides an update on his government’s response to the Greene Report that he initiated shortly after being elected, which called for hard-hitting measures to address the heavy debt and structural deficit faced by the province. You will enjoy this conversation with a new type of leader for Newfoundland and Labrador.
