New Organization To Promote Regional Tourism In N.B.
MONCTON–A new tourism marketing organization is being set up in Southeast New Brunswick and it hopes to capitalize on the recovery of the tourism and hospitality industry after a tough two years.
Destination Moncton-Dieppe has been in the works for a while thanks to provincial legislation in 2019 which allowed hotels and inns to collect a levy for overnight stays.
The organization is being funded by a 3.5 percent levy on accommodations with six rooms or more in the two cities.
Jillian Somers has been named the first CEO and only employee for now.
Over the last couple of years, Somers says staycations have put a spotlight on the province.
“I think not only encouraging people to revisit the region who have been here before, but obviously we’re looking at new individuals to come and experience great urban amenities, restaurants, activities, events, but also the natural wonders that are right in our backyard.”
“So not starting from scratch, both Moncton and Dieppe have had a stake, have had a role, in tourism services in the region for a number of years. So the new DMO (destination marketing organization) will just be sort of absorbing and taking over those responsibilities… have an increased focus.”
Somers will be working with a board of directors to build on tourism activities and to welcome visitors back to the region.
Riverview is not included in the new organization since it currently doesn’t have any hotels or inns but she adds the door is open for the town to join in the future.
Currently the director of events and tourism for the City of Moncton, Somers will begin her new role with Destination Moncton-Dieppe in April.
