Nova Scotians Should Stand with Ukraine, Here’s How They Can
John McConnell-Grant is a Halifax-based political strategist and founder of the popular Urban Halifax blog. He worked for the Nova Scotia Liberal caucus under Premier Stephen McNeil.
Much of the world remains in a state of shock following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. But many Nova Scotians are already looking for ways to help the Ukrainian people. Canada, home to the third-largest Ukrainian community globally, has stepped up to the plate, sending millions of dollars worth of support. Here are some ways everyday Nova Scotians can chip in and support Ukraine:
Donate to the Red Cross’s Ukraine Humanitarian Crisis Appeal
The Canadian Red Cross provides life-saving services to people facing wars and natural disasters. They have set up a campaign to help those impacted by the conflict in Ukraine.

Email Elected Officials
Believe it or not, emails sent to elected officials are usually read (and you might get a response). Sending an email urging further aid for Ukraine to your MP is a great way to show support.
Emails for Member of Parliament can be found with a quick Google search or using this website: https://www.ourcommons.ca/en/contact-us
Report Russian Misinformation
While scrolling on Facebook or Twitter, reporting accounts spreading Russian misinformation or disinformation is an easy way to counter Russian propaganda campaigns. Examples include claims that Russia is invading to simply “de-arm” Ukraine or that this invasion is a form of self-defence.
Support Ukrainian Journalism
Now more than ever, journalists in Ukraine are showing incurable courage. Their front-line reporting is heroic and incredibly valuable.
You can donate to the Kyiv Independent, one of the best independent online publications covering the conflict, here: https://www.patreon.com/kyivindependent
Show Support on Social Media
Social Media is one of the best ways to express your solidarity with Ukraine. Ukrainians must know that the world stands with them against Russian aggression and irredentism. Using your platform to show solidarity is a small but meaningful gesture.
