St. Francis Xavier University President Tests Positive For Covid-19
ANTIGONISH – The president of St. Francis Xavier University (StFX) in Antigonish has tested positive for Covid-19 amid a growing outbreak linked to the university.
Andy Hakin confirmed the news in a post to StFX’s Facebook page on Sunday night. He said two other members of the school’s leadership team also have the virus.
They’re fully vaccinated and experiencing mild, flu-like symptoms.
“I was notified of my positive status last evening. We are all fully vaccinated and experiencing mild flu-like symptoms,” Hakin said. “All Public Health protocols are being followed and we are able to work virtually while we isolate. The focus of our team remains on supporting our students and our community.”
At this time, students are expected to return to class as originally scheduled, on January 4. Exams are also expected to be held before the new semester.
“I want students and faculty to know that time will be dedicated to finishing exams before the new academic term begins,” Hakin says. “The Academic Leadership Team guided by the AVP and Provost is currently working through details. They will be sharing additional information in the days ahead.”

Last week, Hakin also sent out a formal apology after an outbreak of Covid-19 at the university had widespread impacts.
“We deeply regret the consequences of the activities which should have been celebratory occasions for our university and community. Hearing how the virus is impacting our campus and our wider community is simply heartbreaking,” he wrote in an open letter.
The outbreak has been attributed to the university’s X-ring ceremony and graduation events over a week ago.
