Stakeholders Say N.S. Lobster Prices Could Break Records This Season
YARMOUTH – As fishers in Nova Scotia prepare for the upcoming season, the opening price of lobster is a major question.
So far, the window for the season to open early in LFA 33 and 34 has closed, and conditions are being reassessed this weekend.
Brazil Rock 33/34 Lobster Association executive director Dan Fleck says there is potential for prices and demand for local lobster to be good this year.
“There are lots of rumours and I’ve heard: different prices from different areas that are open, it’s looking good,” says Fleck. “I do know that the demand around the world is great for lobster.”
Senior advisor and past president of Coldwater Lobster Association, Bernie Berry, says other LFA’s have had near or record opening rates.
“For example, LFA 35 opened up at $11. Grand Manan area, LFA 38, and LFA 36 that’s along the New Brunswick shoreline, they opened for $10, all record opening prices. Our opening record price (LFA 34) is $8. We’re hoping, like most of the other LFAs, to continue the trend.”
Last year in LFA 34, prices opened at $7 and in LFA 33, between $7.50 to $8.
Port Reps for LFA 34 will hold another weather call at 7:30 a.m. tomorrow, a call for LFA 33 will take place at 8:30 a.m.
