Podcast: How James Mullinger Makes Us Laugh And Be Proud Atlantic Canadians, Too
If you don’t know James Mullinger, it’s time to get acquainted. An immigrant from the UK who recently became a Canadian citizen, he is now a central figure in Atlantic Canadian cultural and media circles.
James is a comedian, magazine editor, author, podcaster and, most of all, entrepreneur. He joins Don Mills and David Campbell on the Huddle “Insights” podcast to talk about his journey and how he became an accidental champion for Atlantic Canada, which he says is a great place to live and always getting better.
“I used to joke about this, the best thing about living in a town or city in Atlantic Canada is that everyone is walking around London or New York complaining that it was so much better 10 years ago,” he tells Don and David. “But no one is walking around Saint John or Halifax saying it was much better here 10 years ago. If you live in a town or city in Atlantic Canada, everything is constantly on the [upswing].”
Don, David and James discuss a wide range of issues from national media bias to cultural self-confidence and the state of entrepreneurship across the region. This is one hour of your time that will be well worth the investment.
You can listen to their conversation in the player above or search for “Huddle Insights” on a podcast platform like Apple or Spotify. Follow the show and never miss an episode. You can also listen to past episodes on those platforms.
The “Insights” podcast combines the experiences of an economist, David Campbell, and a social scientist, Don Mills, to explore the challenges and opportunities facing Atlantic Canada, to promote data-driven decision-making among policymakers, and to encourage a wider dialogue and debate leading to greater prosperity for the region.

WTAF, two middle aged white guys talking about immigration saying a young white guy from England is the type of immigrant the province needs more of. I know the only know superficially about immigration matters but you gotta be able to see what that sounds like. Huddle isn’t responsible for the content but this is Fox News type stuff. And I get their point is James is an advocate for life in the province and he is a funny guy. They really need to do more learning about immigration and inclusion before talking about the subject. Populism is in the woods and this stuff can become fodder for that group.

Hi Sam, it’s Mark the editor here. I wrote the headline which I realize now sent the wrong message, so I changed it to the new one above. What I was trying to do was reflect the characteristics that make James a great immigrant and Atlantic Canadian – he’s ambitious, talented and entrepreneurial. This is true of immigrants that come here from around the world. For me, this is the takeaway from the podcast itself – the kind of conversation Don and David have with James.

Thanks Mark, we’ll done and this effort an example of what makes Canada the nation it is.
The podcasters do thought say this/he is exactly whom we should want, and it’s true James is great, it’s just the circumstances around who’s hosting the discussion and whom they are speaking about. The gentlemen should seek a support from a subject matter advisor when discussing immigrants/inclusion as it’s not their area of expertise. The New Brunswick Multicultural Council would be good.
Indeed all whose choose to immigrate to Canada are as you described, ambitious, talented, and entrepreneurial, again well done Mark.
