These 6 People, Companies And Organizations Are ‘Changemakers’ In Atlantic Canada

HALIFAX – Six Atlantic Canadian businesses and entrepreneurs have been recognized for their success, hard work, and leadership by receiving Volta’s Ecosystem Impact Awards on September 23.
This was the third iteration of Volta’s awards, which was launched in 2019 to celebrate the “changemakers” who are involved in the startup community in Atlantic Canada.
Below, the award categories and winners are listed.
- Catalyst Award: Joint Economic Development Initiative (JEDI). This is awarded to an organization that promotes relationship building, growth, and cohesion in the startup community and helps remove barriers for other startups’ success in the ecosystem. JEDI is is a leading Indigenous organization dedicated to working with partners to foster Indigenous economic development in New Brunswick.
- Community Leader Award: Digital Nova Scotia, the industry association for Nova Scotia’s $2.5 billion ICT and digital technologies sector. This award is given to an organization or individual who has a positive impact on the growth of the technology and innovation sector. They often give back to the community through leadership peer mentorship.
- Corporate Sponsor Award: Microsoft Canada. This award is given to a corporate partner that has supported the startup sector in Atlantic Canada.
- Disruptor Award: Outcast Foods, which takes discarded produce from farms and grocery stores and makes protein supplement products. This award recognizes a startup company that has seen great growth and success over the past year.
- Positive Impact Award (company): Food For Thought Software Solutions, which helps Canadian children access nutritious food through food initiative programs while reducing the stigma around food insecurity. This award is given to a company that has had an impact on a social, environmental, or cultural issue that affects the wider community.
- Positive Impact Award (Individual): Alfred Burgesson, founder and CEO of Tribe Network, a hub for Black, Indigenous and People of Colour pursuing Entrepreneurship & Innovation. This award is given to an individual who has had an impact on a social, environmental, or cultural issue that affects the wider community.
