Podcast: No Tour Of New Brunswick Is Complete Without A Night In Jail
On the latest in a series of conversations about their Love For Local New Brunswick “Electric Summer Social Tour,” Jason Gallant and Mylène Theriault chat with Mark Leger about their night at an old Dorchester jailhouse turned into a bed and breakfast; a tour of the lush Kingsbrae Garden in St. Andrews; and the raucous National Acadian Day celebrations in Caraquet.
“The couple bought it off Kijiji and turned it into a bed and breakfast,” says Jason about The Dorchester Jail. “You actually sleep in one of the jail cells. They have a common room for breakfasts and they have the old gyms there.”
The owners also conduct tours of the old jail, the site of the last double hanging in the province in 1936.
Of course, Jason’s and Mylène’s tour is not generally this macabre. Mylène was particularly enamoured of the Kingsbrae Garden in St. Andrews.
“The story behind the garden is so amazing. It’s so beautiful. If you go to St. Andrews you have to go there,” she says.
Huddle is a media partner for the tour that has Jason and Mylène travelling to 104 communities in 104 days. That doesn’t mean Mark gets to go along for the ride, but it does mean he can connect with them on the road and live vicariously through their adventures.
Mylène and Jason come to their jobs with a natural love of travel and the province. Mylène is an interior designer and photographer from Caraquet, who had already been travelling and promoting the province as a passion in her spare time.
Jason is from Moncton and has been running Hub City Foodies, which promotes breweries, restaurants, and small shops. He’s been doing this for free because of his love for Moncton and New Brunswick, which deepened last summer on a family tour of the province in an RV. Jason echoed Mylène’s enthusiasm about Dalhousie.
This is the second time that Mark has spoken to them as they’ve toured the province.
