Volta In Halifax Opens Ninth Intake Of Its Cohort Program
HALIFAX — Tens of thousands of dollars will be on the line next month as Volta holds the latest round of its Volta Cohort pitch competition.
The competition is a chance for early-stage startup companies to snag a spot in Volta’s Cohort program, which gives new founders a team of mentors, office space, and $25,000 of funding.
Volta is now accepting applications for the ninth intake of the Cohort program. The application window will stay open until September 12.
To be eligible, applicants must be a technology-based, early-stage startup with what Volta calls “an ambitious idea.” Startups must also be based in Atlantic Canada and have not yet received first-round investment.
But getting into the program requires more than a good application: to get in, burgeoning startups must dazzle a panel of judges with a pitch for their business.
n November 24, Volta will select 15 finalists who will each get three minutes to make their case.
After pitches are complete, judges will decide on up to five participants for the program, while the audience members have the time to network and discuss predictions about who will be selected for the next Cohort.
Since launching in 2017, Volta Cohort has awarded more than $750,000 in investment to Atlantic Canadian startups, including well-known success stories like Trip Ninja.
Volta CEO Martha Casey says the cohort program supports Atlantic Canadian companies and their role in establishing the region as a hub for tech and innovation.
“We continue to be impressed with the innovative tech startups in the Atlantic Canadian ecosystem, and it is important that we increase opportunities and exposure for these early-stage companies that we know have real potential to scale,” she says.
