Energia Ventures Looks To Recruit New Team Of Entrepreneurs
FREDERICTON — Energia Ventures at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton is looking for its next new team of entrepreneurs for its startup programming.
Energia, an energy, smart grid, cleantech and cybersecurity accelerator, will run its sixth cohort of the program from Sept. 22 until Dec. 9. From there, new entrepreneurs will pitch their businesses to Energia during a demo day.
The program, which grew out of the UNB’s Technology Management and Entrepreneurship program, is free. Through the 12-week course, participants will receive expert advice, mentoring, education, business support and funding to help develop their startups.
Joe Allen, the managing director for accelerators at the J. Herbert Smith Centre, said there was a high demand for Energia’s programming during its last cohort in the spring. Because of that, he said his team decided to expand the program to twice a year to help up-and-coming entrepreneurs.
“We’re looking for companies that are ready to become real-world conquerors,” said Allen.
Allen said he believes the recent demand is because the program is coming from a “world-class accelerator.” He said as Energia hosts multiple cohorts, its reputation and the quality of its offerings have grown.
The program is used to adapting to offering its programming, seminars and mentorship online due to the Covid-19 pandemic. That will continue this year so entrepreneurs don’t have to relocate their headquarters to Fredericton.
For companies that are interested in applying, Allen said they can go to Energia’s website where they’ll be directed to start their application through a link on F6S, an online tool linking start-ups worldwide. The application deadline is July 11.
“We attract companies from around the world, we get a high number of applications and the founders recognize that it’s a quality product that we’re offering,” said Allen.
“[They’ve] talked to previous participants and are keen and excited to participate in our program.”
