Garden By The Sea Has Natural Solutions For Pain And Skincare Issues
ST. ANDREWS – When Garden by the Sea owner Elaine Bruff was diagnosed with fibromyalgia at 29, she refused to give in to her pain. “I was a single mom with two kids, and I didn’t want to be on a lot of the heavy medications – they were too strong, I couldn’t look after my kids,” said Bruff.
She wanted to try some alternative methods of addressing her diagnosis, which led Bruff to make her own skincare products and opening the store in 2006. Garden by the Sea’s products are available to purchase at their St. Andrews store, from wholesale retailers across Canada and on their website: https://gardenbytheseanb.com/
“We were natural before natural was ‘in’ and we were natural because we had to be – we couldn’t find the products we needed,” she explained.
Bruff says Garden by the Sea sells 100 percent all-natural skincare products, including bath bombs, shower frizzers, soaps and repair creams for eczema and psoriasis. It also sells aromatherapy products that include essential oils and wax melts, and more than 150 varieties of teas, including Cranberry Apple Sea Buckthorn herbal tea and Blueberry white tea.
All of the skincare products are handcrafted locally in New Brunswick, with no perfumes or dyes whatsoever. Bruff makes 95 percent of the products herself, using safe and environmentally friendly ingredients for all age groups, from infants to aging skin.
Garden by the Sea incorporates local ingredients in their products. Bay of Fundy seaweed is a key component in many products such as its Detoxifying Seaweed Facemask and the Canadian Seaweed Scrub. By spreading their products to wholesalers, regular and new clients can purchase products at more locations.
She says each skincare product has been developed for a reason, deriving from a desire to bring relief to people. Garden by the Sea’s “Chill Out!” blend developed out of helping a client manage her chronic cluster migraines. Bruff and her client worked together to find what essential oils made her feel better and to help cope with the pain.
“We came up with different combinations and what that did was it didn’t get rid of her migraines, but it made it that they were ones she could actually manage,” she said.
The “Chill Out” blend helps people with migraines, anxiety and stress and is available as a bath bomb, shower fizzer, wax melts, and aromatherapy spritzers and roll-ons.
Some of the business’ most popular products are their soaps, bath bombs, natural insect deterrents, body butters, and lip balms.
“I developed ‘Aches Away,’ which is our most famous bath bomb of all time, for my fibromyalgia,” said Bruff. “It’s a rosemary mint and lavender, and it works on helping to relax the muscles and mind.”
Bruff began selling Garden by the Sea’s goods online in 2011 with sales increasing over the last decade, even throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.
