Podcast: Kevin Vickers On Economic Growth, Progressive Social Change And Morning Runs
In the third of five “Home Office” conversations with party leaders, Huddle editor Mark Leger speaks with Liberal Leader Kevin Vickers about transforming the N.B. economy in sectors like cybersecurity, nuclear and tourism; growing the population to 1 million people; advancing a progressive social vision by doing things like funding abortion services at the Clinic 554 in Fredericton…and running and biking the backroads and main streets of the province.
Kevin also outlined a progressive social vision that includes providing public funding for abortion services at Clinic 554, something every premier has failed to do since the first Morgentaler clinic opened in the mid-1990s.
“What this all boils down to is respecting the dignity of people. We as a society have to accommodate and ensure, especially women who faced so many challenges, women’s rights,” he says, “and their reproductive rights to me are something that really deserves the highest of attention.”
To get himself ready for a daily grind of campaigning, the Liberal Leader has been hitting the road around sunrise on foot or by bike.
“Since the start of the election (campaign), I’ve been out for a run each morning and enjoying that immensely and also have my bicycle on the bus now so I’m going to enjoy these early mornings either running or biking,” he said. “We have such a magnificent province. Each morning I’m running in a different town or village.”
