Downtown Moncton Businesses Want Main Returned To A Two-Way Street
MONCTON – A number of businesses in downtown Moncton are calling on the city to revert Main back to a two-way street.
Anne Porier Basque with Downtown Moncton Centre-ville Inc. says initially, businesses were willing to give the idea a try.
“When it was first initiated by the city, most of the businesses wanted to try something during the pandemic. But we’re now in the 7th week and they’re finding that the downtown is barren and it’s not working like they thought it would, so they just want it removed,” she says.
By the end of last week, 26 businesses had signed a petition to have the jersey barriers and bicycle lane removed.
Poirier Basque says DMCI has written a letter to the city on behalf of the businesses, asking the change be made as soon as possible.
“With all those requests, I think they should listen to the business community,” she says.
She adds that council is looking at having the first reading to reverse the bylaw at next Monday’s meeting.
