J.D. Irving Company Awarded $72-Million Navy Contract In Halifax
HALIFAX — A Halifax company has won a $72-million contract to support the Canadian navy’s fleet of combat ships.
The federal government announced earlier this week that Fleetway Inc. will provide technical management and engineering support for the navy fleet, possibly until it’s retired “in the early 2040s.”
That work will require an “expert team” to “store and manage critical ship documents,” as well as provide designs and support for new equipment installation on navy ships.
The initial, $72-million contract lasts for six years but could be extended to as many as 22 years for a total value of $552 million.
Prior to winning the contract, Fleetway had already been providing similar support to the navy.
The company’s current in-service support contract was set to expire in October of this year. The newly announced contract will replace that old contract.
The Department of Defense said work under the new contract “began in April 2020,” and the government estimates it will sustain approximately 140 jobs.
“It’s fitting that companies across the province are providing important support to the National Shipbuilding Strategy. This contract … will keep skilled workers employed here at home, while supporting the Canadian Armed Forces in their work abroad,” Dartmouth-Cole Harbour MP Darren Fisher said in a June 29 news release.
Fleetway Inc. was established in 1984 as Saint John Naval Systems to provide engineering and logistical support Canadian Patrol Frigate Program.
The company is now a part of the J.D. Irving Limited group of companies and has a history of providing support to Canadian navy vessels.
