Trudeau Grants Extension To $2,000 Emergency Response Benefit.
OTTAWA – The prime minister had some good news Tuesday for those relying on the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) during the Covid-19 pandemic.
If you’ve been getting the CERB and you still can’t work, you will keep getting $2,000 per month for eight additional weeks.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the government is extending the eligibility period until the end of July.
“We still have a long way to go,” said Trudeau on Tuesday. “Some sectors will come back more quickly than others. A lot of people will find work but not everyone will. In recent months, Canadians have been able to count on the [CERB] to help them through these difficult times. But the truth is that even if some activities will start up again a lot of people will continue to need that support.”
Trudeau says that over the next couple of weeks, they will monitor the economy and the progression of the virus to determine if more changes need to be made to relief programs.
He adds the primary goal for the government is to make sure these programs are working for everyone who needs it.
The government also announced that the U.S./Canada border will continue to be closed for non-essential travel until at least July 21.
