A Portion Of Moncton’s Main Street Will Be One-Way This Summer
MONCTON – Moncton city council has approved the proposal to make Main into a one-way street this summer.
This would allow larger sidewalk patios in order for downtown businesses to meet physical distancing rules, as well as a bi-directional bicycle lane.
City engineer Jack MacDonald says they’ve also considered a number of options to help keep cyclists safe.
“The one that meets the criteria of safety by making sure that with a transition like this that they respect that in fact this is a one lane and we don’t want to put people at risk by driving into the other lane, is the jersey barrier. It allows for quick assembly and disassembly and moving things back to a two-way in the fall, without any damage,” she says.
MacDonald says since this changes in traffic flow significantly and turning one lane into a bicycle lane, a barrier is essential.
City solicitor, Kevin Silliker, says they are also considering a public art treatment for some of the barriers, and hope it will add to the new downtown experience.
