‘Honey Huts’ Installs Porta-Potties For Essential Workers Across Halifax
HALIFAX – With the Covid-19 pandemic affecting every aspect of society, the public has become more sensitive to the needs of essential workers. Every day, people ponder what they can do to assist frontline workers and show their gratitude.
One Halifax company has stepped in to fill a seldom-discussed void facing essential workers: their toilet breaks.
Honey Huts is a porta-potty company that owns 300 units across the HRM. One day, the company’s CTO (Chief toilet officer), Shawn Hiscott, heard a story on the radio about essential workers struggling to find public washrooms when nature called.
“A friend actually heard it on a radio station… that essential workers have nowhere to go to use the washroom now because of Covid-19, and not being able to use Tim Horton washrooms or other public washrooms,” said Hiscott.
“We pride ourselves on our cleanliness and our service, so we wanted to give back.”
Hiscott reached out to two men who had roadside properties on the Bedford Highway and Windmill Road in Dartmouth. They agreed to allow Honey Huts to install essential worker porta-potties on those sites.
The porta-potty on the Bedford Highway got noticed by a passerby, who took a photo and gave a shoutout on Facebook. One commentator explained, from her own experience, why bathrooms for essential workers are so important.
“As a former VON nurse this is amazing, we were always on the hunt for washrooms and I imagine the struggle is worse now. Great job Honey Huts!”
Honey Huts is hoping to set up one more porta-potty in Downtown Halifax. Hiscock said this initiative is the company’s way of saying ‘thank you’ to all the essential workers in the HRM.
