Emera Donates $500,000 to Fund Supporting Victims’ Families
HALIFAX – Nova Scotia Power’s parent company, Emera Inc., has donated $500,000 to the Stronger Together Nova Scotia Fund.
The fund was established earlier this week by the provincial government to help the Red Cross collect donations for families and communities affected by last weekend’s shooting.
“This tragedy has deeply affected our close-knit region at an already difficult time when we cannot physically come together to support one another,” said Emera CEO Scott Balfour in a news release.
“We recognize the leadership of the government of Nova Scotia and the Canadian Red Cross in establishing this important fund and enabling the opportunity to help. Our sincere condolences go out to the families, friends and communities who have been affected by these senseless acts.”
According to the Red Cross, donations to the Stronger Together Nova Scotia Fund will be used for families’ “immediate and long-term needs, including resiliency and capacity building.”
The provincial government has said it will cover all the administrative and programming costs attached to the fund, so 100 percent of the donations will be given to the families and communities in need.
When he first announced the fund on April 22, Premier Stephen McNeil acknowledged the “unimaginable” hurt victims’ families were experiencing but said his conversations with them also revealed their tremendous strength and resiliency.
“While it’s hard to imagine how we’ll ever get through this, we will, and we’ll do it together because Nova Scotia is stronger together,” he said.
As a further show of support, Emera has lit the Emera Pedway and Nova Scotia Power’s 1H building with blue lights.
