Funding Announced For Moncton Accessible Housing Complex
FREDERICTON —The federal government has announced funding for an affordable housing complex in Moncton aimed at adults with physical disabilities.
Renovations are already underway on 34 units at the MacDonald Centre for Independent Living on High Street and six new units are being created.
Many of the units are either partially or fully accessible.
Federal social development minister Ahmed Hussen announced $1.4 million for the project during a visit to Moncton on Monday.
Hussen is urging non-profits, municipal and provincial governments and developers to come together under the National Housing Strategy.
“There is room in there for all of those players to come in and work on proposals with us to build housing,” he says.
Although the federal government will pay the lion’s share of any project, Hussen adds Ottawa can’t work alone and must partner with others.
New Brunswick will be contributing $2.8 million over the next twenty years as part of the bilateral housing agreement between the federal and provincial governments.
