Cafe L’Amiral Is Your New Go-To Spot For French Crepes In Moncton
MONCTON – Pierrick Heudes recently opened Cafe L’Amiral at 527 Main Street, wanting to share what he loves from his home of St. Pierre et Miquelon, a French island off the coast of Newfoundland.
“The concept is we try to do a French cafe here in Moncton,” said Heudes, who named the cafe after the street on which his family home was located in his hometown.
“I’m from St. Pierre et Miquelon. Over there it’s always crepes, pastries and stuff. And I kind of fell in love with the pastries and crepes, so I decided to do French crepes – they’re very thin.”
Heudes moved to the Moncton area seven years ago as a teenager to play hockey in high school. Not knowing what he wanted to do after graduation, he took a few years off and worked various jobs before enrolling in a one-year cooking course at the New Brunswick Community College.
Just before he graduated earlier this year, the 22-year-old started Creperie and Cafe du Vieux Port at the Hotel du Vieux Port in Shediac. He closed the French-inspired cafe that offered coffee, crepes and french pastries at the end of the summer and decided to open a new location in Moncton, where he is based.
Some of his customers who knew him from Shediac has come to try his new cafe already, he said. Heudes runs his 10-seat cafe with the help of four part-time staff.
Cafe L’Amiral offers homemade quiche and croissants, salty and sweet crepes – some with a homemade sauce using French chocolate or Heudes’ own recipe for peppercorn sauce, paninis, salads with homemade vinaigrette, and soups.
“I try to make everything fresh and healthy,” he said.
For beverages, the cafe has coffee-based beverages, hot chocolate, tea, juice and pop.
Cafe L’Amiral is also a distributor of products by De Mello Palheta, a socially conscious specialty coffee roaster in Toronto. The coffee-based beverages at the cafe are made using those beans, but customers can buy the products directly, too.
Cafe L’Amiral is open seven days a week 7 days a week, during the week it’s 7.30 to 6 pm, weekend is 9-5. Take a look inside:
