CN Employees Return To Work After Week-Long Strike
CN employees return to work today after being on strike for over a week.
A tentative agreement was reached by the company and the union representing employees following concerns about workplace safety.
More than 3,000 workers walked off the job on November 19 over worries about long hours, fatigue and the risks associated with the work.
However, the railway suggested instead that issues revolved around worker compensation.
Labour Minister Filomena Tassi says both parties were committed to remaining flexible in order to reach an agreement.
She says the federal government supports mediation and was pleased they didn’t have to enforce back-to-work legislation.
Transportation Minister Marc Garneau says CN is aware of the needs of their customers as they deal with backlog over the coming weeks.
“They will get going as soon quickly possible, but it’s a complex choreography in the sense that you can’t have all of the trains going into B.C. to the port of Vancouver or even the port of Prince Rupert all at the same time,” he said.
