Round Up: Feds Investments in New Brunswick Infrastructure
SAINT JOHN – The federal government was on an infrastructure spending spree in New Brunswick this past week.
In partnership with the provincial government, municipalities and other groups, the feds are funding a bunch of infrastructure projects in the province.
Here is a run-down of what’s been announced so far:
1) $15 million for the Université de Moncton’s New Brunswick Centre for Precision Medicine
The federal government will be contributing $10.5 million to the project, while the province will provide $5.25 million. The centre, which will cost $26.45 million to complete, will build on the university’s strength in biomedical research to provide space for the incubation of emerging companies, and become the province’s first multidisciplinary health research centre situated in a clinical setting.
2) $1 million to expand the Miramichi Airport
Both the federal and provincial government are contributing $500,000 for the development of a new multifunctional air services building. The City of Miramichi is providing $250,000 and the Miramichi Airport Commission is providing $362,000 to the project. The existing 481.5 square metre passenger terminal will be demolished and a new two-storey building will be constructed.
3) $4.19 million to expand the Bathurst Regional Airport
The federal and provincial governments will each contribute up to $2,095,000 for an infrastructure project which will double the size of the existing terminal and extend the runway by 370 metres.
4) $899,705 for Moncton’s Aberdeen Cultural Centre
The feds are contributing $600,000 and the province is providing $299,705 in a revitalization project for the Aberdeen Cultural Centre in Moncton. The funding will be used towards the final renovation phase at the Aberdeen Cultural Centre. The project includes the restoration of the exterior walls and the three main entrances as well as the development of a cultural terrace and outdoor space to house significant productions.
5) $532,500 for Moncton’s Capitol Theatre
The federal government announced that it will provide $532,500 towards a $1 million renovation project.
6) $6.09 million for the Saint John City Market
The feds, the province and the City of Saint John are each contributing $2.03 million for a long overdue upgrade of the Saint John City Market. Though the federal and municipal funding was confirmed last year, on Friday the province formally announced its contribution. The upgrades to the market include replacing the roof, repairing and stabilizing the masonry, upgrades related to building code and energy efficiency, and the addition of an escalator and elevator (now completed).
7) $176 million for water and public transit projects across New Brunswick
The federal and New Brunswick governments announced an agreement to spend more than $176 million on 51 infrastructure projects. The federal government will provide up to 50 per cent of the funding for projects through the Clean Water and Wastewater Fund and the Public Transit Infrastructure Fund. Among the list of 51 approved projects are a new stormwater basin in Moncton, new buses for Miramichi’s public transit fleet, and upgrades to a wastewater treatment facility in Fredericton.
