Belledune’s Brunswick Smelter Gets Air Quality Approval
FREDERICTON – The New Brunswick government will issue a new Class 1 air quality approval for Belledune’s Brunswick Smelter, owned by the embattled Glencore Canada.
Brunswick Smelter produces up to 120,000 tonnes of refined lead per year. The material handling facility handles up to 750,000 tonnes of bulk products including lead and zinc concentrates, coke, sulphuric acid and recycled batteries.
The approval follows a public consultation process that included a 120-day public review that ran from May 14 to Sept. 15.
The Belledune facility has been in operation under several different business names since 1966. According to the provincial government, significant investments have been made to upgrade emission control equipment and material handling operations over the last 30 years.
