Port Saint John goes deep with modernization
Port Saint John is going deep with it’s $205 million modernization plans.
As part of the process, the port is taking on a major harbour deepening project.
The main channel will be deepened from 8.4 to 10 meters. The deepening will extend the operational window for ships and will make Port Saint John more accessible to large vessels, including cruise ships.
“We are delighted that our partners in the Provincial and Federal governments have joined Port Saint John with a commitment of funding,” said Jim Quinn, president & CEO, Port Saint John. “We appreciate their recognition of the importance of both cargo and cruise activity at Port Saint John.”
A deeper channel will provide cruise vessels the ability to dock at either high or low tide. No longer reliant on the tides, cruise operations will no longer have to deal with schedule challenges due to tidal restrictions. Cruise itinerary planners will also gain the opportunity to lengthen the day for cruise guests. This means cruise passengers get more time to experience in the region.
The Port’s modernization also includes major capital work at the Port’s West Side cargo handling piers and facilities. The undertaking is a three-way funding partnership between the federal government, the province and Port Saint John.
Port Saint John is currently working on securing contractors for the undertaking.
