FREDERICTON – New Brunswick Premier Brian Gallant announced today that a byelection will be held October 5, in the riding of Carleton, to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of MLA and former premier David Alward.
Alward, who won re-election in the 2014 vote that his Conservatives lose power, resigned his seat to take up the role as Canada’s consul general in Boston in April of this year.
The byelection campaign will take place in the midst of the longest federal election in Canadian history, which will conclude on October 19.
Currently, the Liberals hold 26 seats in the legislative assembly, the Progressive Conservatives hold 21 seats, and the Greens hold one seat, with one seat vacant.
