Province Will Make Final Decision On Proposed Micro-Cannabis Facility
UPPER COVERDALE, N.B. — A proposed micro-cannabis operation in Upper Coverdale continues to cause concerns from some neighbours in the area.
Gina Brown and her partner own Anchor Cannabis on Route 112 but face a rezoning hurdle before construction of a 2,100 square foot building for indoor cultivation can begin.
Following nearly 100 years of cannabis prohibition in Canada, Brown says stigma still exists surrounding marijuana.
“You know, it’s just not even acceptable I guess in their minds. So the stigma is definitely real and alive out here,” she believes.
John Martel lives nearby and is opposed to rezoning the land from agricultural to commercial-industrial.
Martel admits he was caught off guard noting how few people in the area even knew about the proposal.
“That’s all that is required by law – is that anybody within 100 metres be notified. Well, in an agricultural area there is a lot more than 100 metres between the houses,” he says.
The Southeast Regional Service Commission held another public meeting this week to examine the rezoning of farmland owned by Anchor Cannabis.
If approved, the project would get the green light but the Environment and Local Government Minister will make the final decision which is expected in June.
