Podcast: Kathryn Lockhart And Peter Moreira On Creating “Baby Unicorns” In Atlantic Canada
Since the sales of Q1 Labs and Radian6 for more than a combined $1-billion nearly a decade ago, people in the industry have wondered when the next “unicorn,” or big Atlantic Canadian tech company, would come along. The new CEO of Propel says maybe we should be looking for, and nurturing, “Baby Unicorns” instead.
On the September 25 episode, “Home Office” host Mark Leger chatted with Gordon Pitts about “Unicorn in the Woods”, his new book about the creation and eventual sale of cybersecurity firm Q1 Labs and social media company Radian6, which together sold for more than a billion dollars.
Last week, in an interview with Peter Moreira of Entrevestor, a regional tech publication that also does research and analysis on the industry, Kathryn Lockhart said she’d like the region to focus on the development of smaller, yet successful companies that could eventually become full-sized unicorns.
“Everyone in this space is talking about the next unicorn,” Kathryn told Peter. “I’d love to have a shared goal of producing baby unicorns. Really, if we could say over the next 24 months, we will all get together and make a baby unicorn farm, I wonder what can happen. Unicorns can still be the long-term goal.”
We were so intrigued by this idea that we brought the two of them together to deepen the conversation on this week’s podcast. Tune in for Mark’s chat with Kathryn and Peter about the region’s emerging startup success stories, challenges and opportunities.
