NB Power Teams Up With Fredericton Start-up
FREDERICTON–NB Power and Fredericton-based start-up SimpTek Technologies are teaming up for a data pilot project.
The project will allow SimpTek to collect real-time data analytics on home energy use for NB Power.
The pilot project will allow chosen customers to use SimpTek’s online energy dashboard to instantly monitor their home energy use. The company will collect this anonymous and confidential data and give it to NB Power.
NB Power will be providing and installing the necessary hardware in up to 150 homes. The $15,000 project will be rolled out in the coming months with data collection happening over the span of a year.
For NB Power President and CEO Gaëtan Thomas, building a smart grid in the province could mean savings for both the company and its customers.
“Helping customers understand and change their energy behaviours to save money is our goal right now and so we’re very pleased to support innovation in New Brunswick by partnering with a brilliant local start-up like SimpTek,” said Thomas.
The SimpTek Technologies team is made up of students and graduates of University of New Brunswick’s Technology Management and Entrepreneurship program and the International Business and Entrepreneurship Centre program. The company has gone through the Planet Hatch Launch Program and is currently in the Build Program hosted by Propel ICT and Planet Hatch.
“We’re hoping that once people can actually see how much energy they are using in their homes, they will alter their habits to save and reduce energy” says SimpTek CEO Asif Hasan. “We’ve been working for over a year to develop our product and look forward to seeing how New Brunswickers take advantage of this information to save money.”
