Dieppe’s Malley Industries Enters New Market With Ambulance Delivery To Israel
DIEPPE – Malley Industries, which makes and sells ambulances and custom components across North America, has entered the Middle Eastern market with an ambulance delivery to Magen David Adom (MDA), Israel’s pre-hospital emergency services provider.
“It’s the first vehicle we’ve delivered to Israel, it’s the first vehicle we’ve delivered to that part of the world. We’ve been marketing throughout North America for some time and much more seriously in the last five years, but this is our first foray into Europe and the Middle East,” said David Pargiter, the lead ambulance salesman at Dieppe-based Malley.
MDA already has regular suppliers in the U.S. and Canada, but Malley’s design sets itself apart because the use of thermo-formed composite means there’s more space in the ambulance and it’s lighter than the competitor, Pargiter said. Plus, he notes, it’s easy to clean and impact-resistant. This design, based on a Dodge RAM body, is also what differentiates Malley in the U.S. market.
Because of the extra space, MDA can use the ambulance as a Mobile Intensive Care Unit. This means paramedics and physicians can provide blood tests, ultra sounds and other advanced medical procedures that could otherwise only be performed in hospitals on the field or en route to the hospital.
MDA said in its website that it will primarily use the vehicle to help in providing advanced treatment in complex situations like prolonged resuscitation, complex injuries, complicated births and others.
Conversations between the two parties began at the EMS World Conference in Nashville last October, where Malley’s U.S. business development manager Len Weller had a vehicle at hand. MDA’s representatives liked the space available in the vehicle.
Pargiter said trade shows and events like the conference has been key to Malley’s acquisition of customers.
“You have some very positive conversations [at these trade shows], you never know what’s going to turn into something else. All you can do is give out your contact details and hope that they follow up,” he said.
Mediterranean Chrysler Automobiles, the Dodge RAM and Chrysler dealer in Tel Aviv, was the group that brokered the deal between Malley and MDA, Pargiter said.
The ambulance for MDA is based on specifications of Malley’s New Brunswick ambulances, but with certain modifications, as well as custom-built electrics and upholstery to carry the MDA logo.
Malley delivered the ambulance by air to Tel Aviv in time for a ceremony to honour the late Nechama Rivlin, wife of Israeli president Reuven Rivlin who was an advocate of pre-hospital care and passed away in June.
Because the ceremony led to a tight timeline for the delivery, there are still some customs processes that needs to be completed before the ambulance can go into service. But Pargiter’s hoping this will open the door for more orders in Israel.
“The proof is now in the pudding when the vehicle goes into service to make sure that it does everything they wanted to do,” he said. “We’re keen to get some feedback on how the paramedics find it. That’s who we’re building for.”
“If the feedback is good, we don’t see why [they won’t order more in the future],” he said. “We know what they order now, we know the differences that we could offer, I hope that it’s shown that we can be reactive with some of the changes of schedules and specs, and we can only hope that that gives them what they’re looking for.”
