Cooke Opens AC Covert Seafood Distribution Centre, Retail Outlet In Nova Scotia
DARTMOUTH – AC Covert employs 30 people and spent $5.2-million on its new Burnside Park distribution centre and retail outlet, but it still operates like a seaside fishmonger, delivering the freshest responsibly sourced and prepared fish to fine dining restaurants, hotels, gastro pubs, professional caterers and retailers locally and across North America.
The company is inviting community members to an open house on December 4, when they can tour the new two-story, 26,000-square-foot centre. The event will also feature seafood product samples, special offers and prizes.
Glenn Cooke, CEO of Cooke Inc., says people who come to the open house will get a glimpse of the significant investments the company is making in the Halifax area and across Nova Scotia.
“This expansion is an integral part of our growth plan and we are part way through investing $112-million in Nova Scotia,” said Cooke.
Since 1938, AC Covert has been the fishmonger supplier of choice for the finest retailers and foodservice professionals in Atlantic Canada.
The Cooke family purchased AC Covert in 2008 and now offers more than 400 fresh and frozen seafood products, including smoked salmon, lobster, halibut and scallops.
The Burnside centre is a distribution hub with six trucks making deliveries six days a week, but is also a retail shop offering a variety of products at special prices, open Monday to Saturday from 8 am to 4 pm.
Keith Colwell, Nova Scotia’s Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, says AC Covert’s investment strengthens the province’s position as the country’s top seafood supplier.
“Nova Scotia is Canada’s number one seafood supplier and we now export to 80 international markets,” said Colwell. “We’re home to a diverse range of premium quality seafood and value-added products and it’s wonderful that AC Covert has expanded in our province to distribute seafood products from over 30 Nova Scotia seafood companies.”
Mike Savage, Mayor of Halifax Regional Municipality, says AC Covert adds to the rapid growth taking place in Atlantic Canada’s largest industrial park.
“Burnside is the largest industrial park north of Boston and east of Montreal, with almost 2,000 enterprises and approximately 30,000 employees,” said Savage. “Cooke’s investment in AC Covert shows how our growing community is a beacon for attracting business investment and creating local jobs.”
AC Covert’s open house will take place on December 4 from 2-6 pm at its new distribution centre and retail outlet at 390 Higney Avenue in the Burnside Business Park in Dartmouth.
