Kredl’s Corner Market Sells Mrs. Dunster’s Ice Cream
HAMPTON, N.B. — If you’re a fan of Mrs. Dunster’s doughnuts or gingersnaps with your morning coffee, then you are in luck — you can now get them in ice cream form at Kredl’s Corner Market.
Blair Hyslop, co-owner of Mrs. Dunster’s Bakery and Kredl’s Corner Market, said it all began when he noticed various ice cream products on the market that use outside products like Oxford blueberries.
“I thought, ‘oh, it’d be fun to have something with Mrs. Dunster’s doughnuts or gingersnaps in it, so [the idea’s] kind of been kicking around for a while,” said Hyslop.
But that idea never became a reality until goji’s Neighbourhood Treatery approached Kredl’s about selling its new line of hard ice cream in the store. Hyslop agreed to the idea, but only if goji’s could make some flavours using Mrs. Dunster’s products.
So after one thing led to another, Hyslop said he spent a couple of days with the people at goji’s “chopping up” gingersnaps and doughnuts, where he ended up with two new flavours for residents with an avid sweet tooth.
All in all, the process only took around three months to go from an idea to a reality.
Now customers can buy one-litre containers or scoops of gingersnap ice cream or coffee and doughnuts. The latter flavour uses the classic sugar recipe you can already buy in complete doughnuts, crescents or doughnut holes.
“[The doughnut ice cream] has a strong coffee flavour, which is nice, and the doughnuts are a bit secondary to that in terms of the flavour,” said Hyslop. “If you like coffee ice cream, you’ll love the coffee in this.”
The gingersnap flavour has been a “clear winner,” according to Hyslop. With a strong hint of the cookie combined with vanilla ice cream, he said the results are “out of this world.”
Hyslop said both products are selling well. He said halfway through the first week of sales, Kredl’s ran out of ice cream and had to wait another week for their next delivery. The demand on social media has also been high, receiving “thousands of hits” on Facebook when it launched.
“Clearly people were ready for ice cream season to start and we kind of hit it at just the right time,” said Hyslop.
Kredl’s is always willing to collaborate with local companies on different products, considering how the market has the largest variety of local products in the province, Hyslop said. While there isn’t a “master plan” to collaborate with places like goji’s, he said it’s still a lot of fun.
“We’ll see how it goes this summer and figure it out, but it’s a more of a fun kind of thing,” he said.
