What Laura Calder is Loving Today
In this series, we ask members of New Brunswick’s business community to share the things they’re loving these days.
This week we asked cooking and lifestyle columnist Laura Calder:
“Nobody bothers with white linen anymore, but for some reason, I was possessed about a year ago with getting a white linen tablecloth, and as soon as I did a strange thing happened. You see, once you lay one on your table, it begs for the table to be set… and then, once the table is set, it begs for proper food – nothing fast, but a slow un-foodie kind of feast, like roast beef or fish pie. Ultimately, the purchase of that tablecloth led to the initiation of ‘The Sunday Roasters’, a club that gathers about once a month for a proper family, meat-and-potatoes sort of feast, although none of us are actually family. The club, by chance, consists of people who live in Toronto but aren’t from here (many Maritimers). Just as a carpet flung on desert sands can instantly create a ‘room.’ That tablecloth makes an immediate gathering space that’s incredibly beckoning and reassuring: a home away from home and a call to action. Without it, the Sunday roast club would never have happened.”
