Organigram Signs Deal to Supply Marijuana to PEI’s Recreational Market
MONCTON – Organigram has signed an agreement with the Prince Edward Island government to supply one million grams of marijuana per year for sale in the province’s recreational market.
Greg Engel, Organigram’s Chief Executive Officer, says PEI recognizes that there is a high-quality supplier at home in the Maritimes.
“There is tremendous cannabis expertise here in the Maritimes,” said Engel, in a release. “We have worked hard to assemble a local, world-class team of experts. We applaud PEI’s recognition of our homegrown industry leadership and its commitment to building – and formalizing – positive and productive working relationships with regionally-based companies like Organigram.”
Heath MacDonald, P.E.I.’s Minister of Finance, said people can feel confident in the product they’re buying from Organizgram.
“Islanders who choose to partake in recreational cannabis in PEI can be confident that the products available to them will be safe, of high-quality, and provided through licensed suppliers committed to cannabis education and responsible use,” said Engel.
The PEI Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) is similar to one Organigram signed last year with the New Brunswick government.
One of four distributors there, Organigram will supply a minimum of 5 million grams of cannabis a year to the New Brunswick recreational market. The GNB MOU is estimated to have a retail value of between $40 million to $60 million per year.
Ray Gracewood, Organigram’s Chief Commercial Officer, says the company will work closely with the PEI government to develop and contribute to social responsibility programs that will provide ongoing education, helping ensure public safety remains a priority.
“There is no successful cannabis market or industry without an unwavering commitment to public safety,” says Gracewood. “We are proud to work with PEI and share their vision of a thriving, responsibility-first recreational market.”
