This Moncton Business Is Celebrating Women Through A Photo Series
MONCTON – More than 45 women took part in an International Women’s Day event on March 8 at Sequoia Downtown Moncton. Store owner Danielle Gauvin found the stories shared by women there so inspiring and instructive she’s launched a photo series called “Woman to Woman,” featuring advice from attendees and customers.
“Nowadays…there’s so much negative things out there [for young people] and so much pressure coming from all different areas of life and directions and stuff they see online,” she said.
“If people can turn to our page and see advice from real women in our community, people that they look up to or people they’ve seen in the community, I think it could really help other women with their confidence or mental well being, just knowing that there are other people in our community they can relate to.”
Local photographer Sharlie Faye was on-site to take the portraits of many of the women.
Gauvin had wanted to publish the photos closer to the event but had to delay the release as she had to figure out how to continue operations during the coronavirus crisis.
She now plans to publish the approximately 40 photos, along with a piece of advice from the women photographed, throughout April.
She’s hoping it would give a bit of brightness to the businesses’ nearly 9,300 followers on Facebook and almost 6,000 followers on Instagram.
Gauvin herself has learned a lot from the advice other women gave to her. The one that stuck out the most is to “try not to care too much about what other people think of you.”
“I think it’s really, really easy to get caught up in that,” she said. “So, I think it’s really important just to stay on your path and not to doubt yourself. That’s what I’ve heard from other leaders and people in the community when I had doubts about myself.”
She also has her own advice to share, and that’s to “really go after what you want.”
“There’s so much doubt that can come from what am I capable of? Am I good enough? Can I actually do it? What will people think of me?” she said.
“It was really scary for me to purchase my first business five years ago and now looking back, I’m so happy that I had the support system and the people in my life being, like, just go for it. You’re going to succeed. It’s going to be incredible.”
And if going after what you want doesn’t work out?
“That’s okay. But at least you’ve tried,” she said.
